Harmonised carbon and energy footprints of fossil hydrogen

Antonio Valente et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodology for evaluating the environmental performance of product systems. A specific LCA harmonisation initiative has been undertaken regarding hydrogen, aiming to improve the robustness of comparative LCAs by developing harmonisation protocols and libraries of life-cycle indicators. This study fills the gap in existing libraries by calculating harmonised carbon and energy footprints of hydrogen for new case studies involving various production pathways.

Net zero in the heating sector: Technological options and environmental sustainability from now to 2050

Peter C. Slorach et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the environmental sustainability of a range of heating technologies and scenarios on a life cycle basis, identifying heat pumps as one of the most environmentally friendly options but highlighting the high energy demand and impacts of hydrogen production through electrolysis. Gas boilers, despite higher carbon emissions, remain the lowest impact option in certain categories due to impacts related to electricity generation being avoided.

Conversion of natural gas jet flame burners to hydrogen

Adriana Palacios et al.

Summary: The study compared the jet flame characteristics of H2 and CH4 on burner diameter scale, finding that H2 has higher blow-off limits but lower heat release rates compared to CH4, suggesting that increasing H2 flow velocity or slightly increasing pipe diameter could compensate for this. Blended CH4/H2 flames have lower heat release rates than CH4 alone, yet small proportions of H2 with CH4 can still be burned on a CH4 burner.

Hybrid renewable energy applications in zero-energy buildings and communities integrating battery and hydrogen vehicle storage*

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that battery storage can improve the self-consumption of renewable energy, load coverage, efficiency of hydrogen systems, and grid integration of zero-energy communities. Compared to baseline scenarios, zero-energy scenarios with battery storage can reduce grid penalty costs, increase lifetime net present value, and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Long-distance renewable hydrogen transmission via cables and pipelines

Bin Miao et al.

Summary: Intermittency is a major obstacle in the widespread adoption of renewable energy, with challenges including short-term and long-term fluctuations, supply-demand mismatch, and remote energy sources that require cost-effective transmission solutions. Studies on the cost of long-distance energy transmission are limited, with this paper exploring the economic feasibility of transmitting renewable energy through power cable or gas pipeline routes, highlighting the importance of capacity factor and transmission scale improvements for achieving economically viable renewable hydrogen production.
