Effects of orthodox religious fasting versus combined energy and time restricted eating on body weight, lipid concentrations and glycaemic profile

Summary: The study found that the Orthodox Fasting diet had superior lipid-lowering effects compared to the time-restricted eating pattern. Both groups experienced reductions in BMI, but only the OF group showed significant reductions in total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels. Glycaemic and inflammatory parameters did not show significant differences between the two groups.

Among modifiable factors in mental illness, lifestyle and nutrition play crucial roles, with intermittent fasting emerging as an innovative strategy to prevent and treat mental health disorders. Time restricted feeding, particularly, shows promise in promoting brain health by influencing brain signaling, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Christian Orthodox fasting (OF) and 16:8 time-restricted eating (TRE) on circulating irisin levels among overweight, metabolically healthy adults. The results showed that the OF group had higher irisin concentrations compared to both baseline values and the TRE group, with parathyroid hormone levels correlating with irisin concentrations. Further investigation into the relationship between irisin, PTH, and diet is warranted.
