Can Michigan's Upper Peninsula Achieve Justice in Transitioning to 100% Renewable Electricity? Survey of Public Perceptions in Sociotechnical Change

Adewale A. Adesanya

Summary: The energy cost in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan is one of the highest in the United States, causing hardship for residents. While interest in renewable energy is increasing, unanswered questions remain about factors influencing support for a 100% RE transition and how this differs between counties in the region. The research found a significant correlation between residents' likelihood to participate in a 5% consumption reduction initiative and support for wind energy development, with high support for a 100% RE transition across counties.

Renewable energy sources and the cycles in deregulated electricity markets

Santiago Arango-Aramburo et al.

Summary: The deregulation of electricity markets has led to cycles in generation capacity, influenced by factors such as construction delays, long lifetime of installed capacity, and limited industry transparency. The introduction of renewable generation shortens the construction time of capacity but increases uncertainty. Renewable energy has the potential to impact generation cycles but does not improve transparency regarding planned, under-construction, or retiring capacity.

Day-ahead and intra-day optimization for energy and reserve scheduling under wind uncertainty and generation outages

Yongli Ji et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-time-scale optimal scheduling framework for co-optimized electricity markets to enhance system cost-effectiveness and reliability. With two phases of day-ahead planning and intra-day adjustment, the proposed models efficiently address uncertainties and provide robust operating plans for power systems.

Towards a 100% renewable energy electricity generation system in Sweden

Jin Zhong et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of achieving Sweden's goal of 100% renewable electricity production by strengthening wind power generation. By tripling the existing wind power capacity and combining it with existing hydropower, the goal could be reached within 20 years.

Understanding New Zealand's wind resources as a route to 100% renewable electricity

Stephen Poletti et al.

Summary: The New Zealand Government aims to achieve a 100% renewable electricity system by 2035, with wind generation playing a significant role. Wind output simulations at 44 wind farm sites over a 20-year period show an average capacity factor of 40%, with highest output in spring and lowest in autumn. There is little correlation between wind output and electricity demand, but a small positive correlation with daily inflows into hydro storage. The study also highlights the limitations of wind energy in bridging energy shortfalls during dry years.
