A novel experimental and density functional theory study on palladium and nitrogen doped few layer graphene surface towards glucose adsorption and electrooxidation

Aykut Caglar et al.

Summary: Few layer graphene (G) and nitrogen-doped few layer graphene (N-doped G) are prepared on Cu foil via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), then transferred to indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate to obtain electrodes. Pd metal is electrodeposited onto the N-doped G/ITO electrode, which is characterized by Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDX. Analysis shows the successful formation of G and N structures, with the best glucose electrooxidation activity observed on the P-N-doped G/ITO electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to study the molecular interactions on Pd-modified G and Pd-modified N-doped G surfaces.

Evaluating mutual influences of cation-π interactions and H-bonding: Cases of indole and BN-indole

I. K. Petrushenko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mutual influences of hydrogen bond and cation-pi interactions in complexes of indole and BN-indole with Li+ and H2O, using SAPT2 to determine the interaction strength and energy constituents. The study shows that the interactions are enhanced when substituting a CC bond with a BN one, with the strength reaching up to 8.09 kcal/mol. The results provide insights into the interplay between H-bonds and cation-pi interactions in biologically relevant molecules.

Tuning the electronic transition energy of indole via substitution: application to identify tryptophan-based chromophores that absorb and emit visible light

Robert J. Micikas et al.

Summary: The absorption spectra of a library of 4-substituted indoles were examined, revealing a linear correlation between the frequency of the absorption maximum and the global electrophilicity index of the substituent. This allowed the identification of two promising candidates, 4-formyltryptophan and 4-nitrotryptophan, both of which can be excited by visible light. While 4-formyltryptophan emits cyan fluorescence with a reasonably large quantum yield, 4-nitrotryptophan is essentially non-fluorescent, suggesting potential use as a fluorescence reporter or quencher.
