Wood-Derived Hydrogels as a Platform for Drug-Release Systems

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: Wood-based hydrogels containing cellulose and lignin were successfully developed as drug-release platforms. The viscoelastic and cross-linking properties of precursor solutions were adjusted to create highly porous hydrogel structures through freeze-drying. Variations in the lignin molecular structure significantly influenced the swelling and mechanical performance of the hydrogels, with organosolv-type lignin demonstrating optimal properties for drug release systems.

Preparation of cellulose-based hydrogel: a review

Sarah Husnaini Zainal et al.

Summary: Cellulose, the most abundant natural organic polymer on earth, has low solubility in water and most organic solvents. Specific solvent systems are required for cellulose applications. Hydrogel, as a 3D network structure, can retain a tremendous amount of water and highly depends on the crosslinking property.
