Powder-based laser hybrid additive manufacturing of metals: a review

Summary: Recent advancements in additive manufacturing have expanded its application from prototyping to producing functional parts, particularly in the aerospace, biomedical, and automotive industries. However, achieving tight geometrical tolerances and strict surface integrity requirements often requires extensive post-processing, leading to the emergence of hybrid AM solutions that integrate additive manufacturing with post-processing technologies. Research is focused on combining laser-based AM with necessary post-processing to produce metal parts with accuracy, surface integrity, and material properties. Commercially available hybrid AM systems are reviewed along with challenges and open issues in industrial adoption.
