Understanding processing parameter effects for carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites manufactured by laser-assisted automated fibre placement (AFP)

Jiping Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of laser-assisted automated fibre placement (AFP) on the mechanical properties of carbon fibre (CF)/polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) composites, with results indicating that interlaminar void content plays a significant role in determining the mechanical properties of the composites.

Between-the-Holes Cryogenic Cooling of the Tool in Hole-Making of Ti-6Al-4V and CFRP

Asif Iqbal et al.

Summary: A novel technique of cooling the twist drill during hole drilling of high-strength lightweight materials shows potential in reducing tool wear, thrust force, and specific energy consumption, as well as improving hole quality. Compared to conventional continuous cryogenic cooling and no-cooling methods, the between-the-holes cryogenic cooling approach presents promising results in drilling CFRP and titanium alloy.

Effect of cutting parameters on thrust force, torque, hole quality and dust generation during drilling of GLARE 2B laminates

Imed Boughdiri et al.

Summary: The study found that feed has a significant effect on thrust force and torque during drilling of GLARE (R) hybrid aerospace material, and the use of DLC-coated tools can reduce surface deviation. Lower spindle speed can reduce the number of harmful particles in the air during drilling.

Investigation of microstructure, mechanical and machinability properties of Mo-added steel produced by powder metallurgy method

Mehmet Akif Erden et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of molybdenum inclusion on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability of steels manufactured using the powder metallurgy approach. The results indicated that steel with 3% Mo displayed the highest yield and tensile strength. Furthermore, an increase in Mo content led to higher yield and tensile strength and a decrease in strain, while coated cutting tools showed better machining output in terms of environmental impact.

Tool wear and machinability investigations in dry turning of Cu/Mo-SiCp hybrid composites

Emine Sap et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different machining parameters on Cu/Mo-SiCp composites during turning, finding that the particle additive ratio was the most important parameter affecting surface roughness, tool wear, and cutting temperature. It was also observed that chip types and wear types changed with increasing reinforcement rates.

Machinability investigations on CFRP composites: a comparison between sustainable cooling conditions

Mohd Danish et al.

Summary: This study investigates the milling performance of CFRPs in different lubri-cooling mediums, including dry, minimal lubrication, liquid nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, establishing a relationship between machining parameters and cutting mechanisms using response surface methodology (RSM). The parametric optimization was conducted using NSGA-II and PSO, with the latter showing better performance in terms of convergence characteristics and computational time. The empirical cumulative distribution-based data analysis suggests that all responses are compatible with the normal distribution function, and the ANOVA models are found to be substantial at a 95% confidence level, with lubri-cooling medium being the most critical factor affecting response parameters.

Tool Wear and Surface Evaluation in Drilling Fly Ash Geopolymer Using HSS, HSS-Co, and HSS-TiN Cutting Tools

Mohd Fathullah Ghazali et al.

Summary: In geopolymer drilling, the spindle speed is directly proportional to tool wear and inversely proportional to surface roughness. HSS-Co is the most favorable tool for drilling, with only HSS-Co drilling 15 holes at 100rpm without exceeding the maximum tool wear. The findings can serve as a guide for manufacturers and researchers for further applications of geopolymer.

Parametric Optimization for Improving the Machining Process of Cu/Mo-SiCP Composites Produced by Powder Metallurgy

Emine Sap et al.

Summary: Composite materials, such as Cu/Mo-SiCP composite materials produced by powder metallurgy, exhibit excellent performance attributes. The reinforcement ratio was found to be the dominant factor influencing all response parameters. Different machining parameters also have an impact on surface roughness, flank wear, and cutting temperature.

CFRP drilling under throttle and evaporative cryogenic cooling and micro-lubrication

Asif Iqbal et al.

Summary: Based on experimental results, micro-lubrication outperformed dry drilling and cryogenic coolants in terms of process viability, while throttle cryogenic cooling yielded the best results in work quality measures. Pecking showed disappointing results in most measures, whereas high cutting speed had advantages in specific cutting energy and process cost.
