Management of new onset loss of sense of smell during the COVID-19 pandemic - BRS Consensus Guidelines

Claire Hopkins et al.

Summary: This study aims to provide recommendations for the investigation and management of patients with new onset loss of sense of smell during the COVID-19 pandemic. A panel of 15 experts used the RAND/UCLA methodology to reach consensus on treatment options, referral guidelines, and imaging. Consensus was achieved on most statements after 2 rounds of ranking, with olfactory training recommended for all patients with persistent loss of sense of smell, and individual consideration for oral steroids, steroid rinses, and omega 3 supplements.

Efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in the treatment of long-lasting olfactory disorders in COVID-19 patients

Luigi Angelo Vaira et al.

Summary: This study involving 18 COVID-19 patients with olfactory disorders found that a treatment regimen including steroids resulted in significant improvements in olfactory function compared to untreated controls. The findings suggest that this specific therapy may be useful in reducing the prevalence of long-term olfactory morbidity.

Systemic corticosteroids in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related smell dysfunction: an international view

Caroline Huart et al.

Summary: The frequent association between COVID-19 and olfactory dysfunction is leading to a demand for treatment, with systemic corticosteroids considered as an option. However, caution is advised due to weak evidence supporting their effectiveness, high rate of spontaneous recovery, and potential adverse effects. Instead, smell training, which has strong evidence and no known side effects, should be considered initially.
