Large variations in eutrophication among estuaries reflect massive differences in composition and biomass of macroalgal drift

Ian C. Potter et al.

Summary: The study compared the characteristics of macroalgae drift in highly eutrophic and mesotrophic estuaries in southwestern Australia, finding that the eutrophic estuary had higher abundance and different types of macroalgae, mainly opportunistic chlorophytes, while the mesotrophic estuary was dominated by rhodophytes. Macroalgal biomass in the eutrophic estuary was positively correlated with salinity, and macroalgal prevalence and biomass were higher in summer and autumn.
