Toxigenic strains of Azadinium poporum (Amphidomataceae, Dinophyceae) from Japan and Vietnam, with first reports of A. poporum (ribotype A) and A. trinitatum in Asian Pacific

Kazuya Takahashi et al.

Summary: The morphology and phylogeny of small armored dinoflagellate Azadinium species isolated from Japanese and Vietnamese coasts were studied, along with the analysis of dominant azaspiracids (AZAs). Differences in cellular morphology and AZA composition were found between Japanese and Vietnamese cultures of A. poporum. This study provides the first report of toxigenic A. poporum from Japan and Vietnam, with new identifications of major AZAs including ribotype A in A. poporum and A. trinitatum as first records in Asia.

Molecular Identification and Toxin Analysis of Alexandrium spp. in the Beibu Gulf: First Report of Toxic A. tamiyavanichii in Chinese Coastal Waters

Yixiao Xu et al.

Summary: Research in the Beibu Gulf region found low toxicity levels in Alexandrium strains, suggesting that higher toxicity strains may exist but were not sampled. Other sources of PSTs and biotransformation in shellfish were also suggested as explanations for PST levels exceeding regulatory limits in the region.

Cyst-theca relationships of Spiniferites bentorii, S. hyperacanthus, S. ramosus, S. scabratus and molecular phylogenetics of Spiniferites and Tectatodinium (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae)

Summary: Experiments on the germination of resting cysts matching the morphologies of four Spiniferites species revealed that each may correspond to different Gonyaulax species. Gene sequences obtained from these species also supported this idea, showing that Spiniferites are not over-classified.
