The influence of orbital parameters on the North American Monsoon system during the Last Interglacial Period

Nadja Insel et al.

Summary: The study indicates that Eemian insolation forcing results in overall wetter conditions in most of the southwestern US, but significantly drier conditions in Arizona compared to present. The wetter conditions are mainly associated with a northward shift of the anticyclonic circulation aloft and increased moisture in the lower and mid-troposphere during the Eemian period.

Tree mortality in western US forests forecasted using forest inventory and Random Forest classification

Summary: Climate change is projected to have a significant impact on forest vulnerability to wildfires, insects, disease, and droughts in the western United States. Species identity was found to be the most important predictor of mortality, with contributions from climate and soil variables. The study suggests that future predictions of widespread forest mortality should focus on vulnerable species and that significant mortality events in certain species may not have a large impact on all systems.
