Sensitivity of 21st Century Ocean Carbon Export Flux Projections to the Choice of Export Depth Horizon

Hilary I. Palevsky et al.

Summary: This study compared the changes in global ocean carbon export flux and export efficiency under different depth horizons (MLDmax and 100m) for the 21st century. The enhanced stratification makes it more difficult for export efficiency to decrease in deep winter mixing regions. The choice of different depth horizons can significantly impact the spatial patterns of simulated results.

Seasonal-to-decadal scale variability in primary production and particulate matter export at Station ALOHA

David M. Karl et al.

Summary: The ALOHA benchmark station in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre was established to enhance understanding of carbon fluxes in the surface ocean. Over the past 30 years, there have been significant increases in primary production, chlorophyll a, and suspended particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the 75-125 m portion of the water column, possibly due to enhanced nutrient supply in this lower part of the water column.
