Impact of Chemical Environment on Compaction Behaviour of Quartz Sands during Stress-Cycling

M. T. W. Schimmel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of pore fluid chemistry on short-term compaction of quartz sand aggregates through uniaxial stress-cycling experiments. The results showed that different fluid environments can influence compaction, with fluid-saturated samples producing more compaction than dry samples in the first loading-unloading stress-cycle. However, with prolonged stress-cycling, the fluid-enhanced compaction effects disappeared as crack growth rates reduced.

Experimental and Numerical Studies on Crack Initiation and Coalescence in Sandy Mudstone with Prefabricated Cross-Flaws Under Uniaxial Compression

Dongxu Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence behavior of a sandy mudstone sample with two sets of prefabricated cross-flaws under uniaxial compression. Two key parameters, the dip angle of the rock bridge and the angle between the main and minor flaws, are found to significantly affect crack stress. Numerical simulations were conducted to validate the experimental results, demonstrating the importance of these parameters in predicting crack behavior.

Evaluating rock mass disturbance within open-pit excavations using seismic methods: A case study from the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station

Antony Butcher et al.

Summary: Understanding rock strength is crucial for major excavation projects, especially when constructing critical infrastructure. Excavation weakens the rock mass, necessitating adjustments in strength models to account for rock disturbance. Seismic methods offer a low-cost and efficient way to assess excavation-induced rock mass disturbance.

Dongxu Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that the presence of prefabricated cross-flaws promotes more severe rock sample fractures during uniaxial loading. In addition, two new crack coalescence mechanisms that have not been reported in previous studies were observed.

Investigation of the Kaiser effect in anisotropic rocks with different angles by acoustic emission method

Mehdi Kharghani et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of anisotropy on the Kaiser effect on the rock by conducting acoustic emission tests on Phyllites specimens with various angles of anisotropy. The results show that anisotropy does not have a significant effect on the Kaiser effect in uniaxial compression tests, but samples with zero-degree angle of anisotropy have a more accurate prediction of the Kaiser effect in Brazilian tensile strength tests. Uniaxial compression tests are also found to be more accurate in determining the Kaiser effect than Brazilian tensile strength tests.

Crack Evolution Characteristics and Cracking Mechanism of Red Beds in Central Sichuan during Seepage and Swelling

Zhe Zhou et al.

Summary: The cracking mechanism of red beds in Central Sichuan during seepage and swelling was studied through multiple cracking tests and numerical analysis. The evolution process of swelling cracks was divided into three stages, with the crack degree being influenced by factors such as initial water content and clay mineral content. Uneven water absorption and clay mineral distribution were found to lead to uneven swelling and generation of cracks.

Acoustic emission monitoring of hydraulic fracturing using carbon dioxide in a small-scale field experiment

Tsuyoshi Ishida et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a promising method for mitigating the greenhouse effect, especially by utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) for recovery of geothermal energy and shale gas. Experiments show that hydraulic fracturing (HF) using CO2 can induce larger cracks, presenting potential pathways for energy recovery and storage.

The response mechanism of acoustic and thermal effect when stress causes rock damage

Hai Sun et al.

Summary: This study utilized a combined monitoring system of Infrared Radiation (IR) and Acoustic Emission (AE) to analyze the acoustic and thermal effects during rock damage. The results showed that mutations in VSMIT and D-m before rock failure can serve as precursors to failure. The spatial characteristics of acoustic and thermal effects during rock damage indicate a homologous anomalies relationship between AE and IR.
