Olfactory function in the trace amine-associated receptor family (TAARs) evolved twice independently

Milan Dieris et al.

Summary: The origin and evolution of olfactory receptor families have seen independent occurrences of olfactory functionality within the TAAR family. In lamprey, an ancestral gene expanded to generate a large family of olfactory receptors. Meanwhile, in bony fish, two ancestral genes gave rise to the complete repertoire of mammalian olfactory taar genes. The evolutionary dynamics in bony fish genomes involve many late gene birth events and both early and late gene death events.
