Horizontally acquired antibacterial genes associated with adaptive radiation of ladybird beetles

Hao-Sen Li et al.

Summary: This study identified a set of bacterial cell wall hydrolase (cwh) genes acquired by 38 species of ladybird beetles, which have been maintained in all tested Coccinellinae species, suggesting a role in the evolution of predominant predatory ladybirds. It demonstrates that enhanced immunity through HGT might have played a key role in the prey adaptation and niche expansion that promoted the diversification of carnivorous beetle lineages.

De NovoWhole-Genome Assembly of the Swede Midge (Contarinia nasturtii), a Specialist of Brassicaceae, Using Linked-Read Sequencing

Boyd A. Mori et al.

Summary: The swede midge is a significant agricultural pest that feeds specifically on plants within the Brassicaceae family, inducing gall formation and causing yield losses. The annotated genome of C. nasturtii revealed genes encoding enzymes involved in glucosinolate detoxification, indicating similar strategies to other insect pests for feeding on Brassicaceae. This genome will contribute to research on plant-insect interactions and effective pest management strategies.

Horizontally transmitted parasitoid killing factor shapes insect defense to parasitoids

Laila Gasmi et al.

Summary: The study describes a gene family that is toxic to hymenopteran parasitoids, determining parasitism success. PKFs are found in various entomopathogenic DNA virus families and in some lepidopteran genomes, showing equivalent and specific toxicity against parasitoids.
