Disentangling effects of disturbance severity and frequency: Does bioindication really work?

Remigiusz Pielech et al.

Summary: The study proposed six disturbance indicator values to describe the ecological niches of plant species along gradients of disturbance frequency and severity, and investigated their potential for bioindication in community ecology. Results showed a strong association between the disturbance severity index and longitudinal gradient, with the main problem identified as the strong correlation between severity and frequency indices. The study concludes that while the disturbance severity and frequency indices have considerable applicative potential, determining ecological niches separately for these two components is challenging due to their interaction in shaping species' realized niches.

Thermophilous oak forests in Slovakia: classification of vegetation and an expert system

Katarina Hegedusova et al.

Summary: Deciduous thermophilous oak forests in Slovakia are rich in species diversity and face endangerment, but a revised and unified syntaxonomic classification system has been introduced based on numerical analysis of a large dataset. The classification includes eleven associations classified into three alliances, with detailed descriptions of each association's species composition, ecology, and distribution provided. Ecological indicators and bioclimatic variables were used to assess the ecological preferences of the syntaxa, and conservation value and threats to these oak forests were discussed.

Syntaxonomical revision of the order Fagetalia sylvaticae Pawlowski ex Pawlowski et al. 1928 in Slovakia

Mariana Ujhazyova et al.

Summary: This study represents the first complete syntaxonomical revision of beech, fir, and mixed montane forest communities in Slovakia, using various criteria to classify vegetation and identify associations within alliances. A total of 18 associations were identified within different alliances, providing detailed descriptions and diagnostic information for each unit. The study also resolved the delimitation of Western and Eastern Carpathian mesotrophic beech and fir forests at the association and alliance levels.
