Intraspecific variability of specific leaf area fosters the persistence of understorey specialists across a light availability gradient

S. Chelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the specific leaf area (SLA) patterns of beech forest understorey plants along a light availability gradient, focusing on habitat specialists and generalists separately. The increase in community-level SLA with decreasing light availability was primarily driven by beech forest specialists, with high intraspecific variability playing a key role. This suggests that specialists' ability to adjust their light capture strategies intraspecifically may contribute to their persistence under less favorable conditions.
