COVID-19 and food security: Panel data evidence from Nigeria

Summary: The study shows that households exposed to higher COVID-19 case rates or mobility lockdowns experience a significant increase in measures of food insecurity. Additionally, the spread of the pandemic is associated with significant reductions in labor market participation. Lockdown measures are linked to an increase of 6-15 percentage points in households' experience of food insecurity and a 12 percentage points reduction in the probability of participation in non-farm business activities.

Socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 in low-income countries

Summary: Phone survey data from Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, and Uganda shows that 256 million individuals-77% of the population-live in households that have lost income during the pandemic. Attempts to cope with this loss are exacerbated by food insecurity and an inability to access medicine and staple foods. Student-teacher contact has dropped significantly among households with school-aged children.

Immediate and medium-term policy responses should be designed to address these issues and provide alternative programs to substitute the affected nutritional services.
