A narrative review of reward sensitivity, rash impulsivity, and food addiction in adolescents

Summary: Adolescence is characterized by heightened reward drive and weaker inhibitory control, which may increase vulnerability to compulsive overconsumption of highly-palatable foods and food addiction. Impulsivity traits (reward sensitivity and rash impulsivity) were found to be associated with food addiction in adolescents, with mixed relationships between reward sensitivity and food addiction. Longitudinal and prospective research is recommended to further confirm these findings and investigate potential interactive effects of reward sensitivity and rash impulsivity.
