Can we manage fisheries with the inherent uncertainty from eDNA?

Christopher L. Jerde

Summary: Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a general approach in aquatic systems that aims to infer species' physical presence through the presence of genetic material in the water. However, compared to traditional methods, eDNA approaches have more sources of error that may lead to false positives. By evaluating eDNA research programs and concurrently searching for fish using traditional gears, confidence in the eDNA approach can be built.

RivFishTIME: A global database of fish time-series to study global change ecology in riverine systems

Lise Comte et al.

Summary: A global database of long-term riverine fish surveys was compiled, which includes data from 46 regional and national monitoring programmes and individual academic research efforts. The database contains information from 19 countries, five biogeographical realms, and 402 hydrographical basins, spanning the period 1951-2019, and includes data on 944 species of ray-finned fishes. This comprehensive database will be valuable for ecologists studying the impacts of human activities on riverine fish biodiversity and predicting future environmental changes on fish communities.
