Delayed administration of high dose human immunoglobulin G enhances recovery after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury by modulation of neuroinflammation and protection of the blood spinal cord barrier

Jonathon Chon Teng Chio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effects of hIgG on SCI and found that hIgG significantly improved short-term and long-term outcomes at different administration time points. It was observed that hIgG enhanced the integrity of the blood spinal cord barrier, reduced immune cell infiltration and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, hIgG increased expression of neutrophil chemoattractants, leading to improved tissue preservation and sensory recovery after SCI.

Acute post-injury blockade of α2δ-1 calcium channel subunits prevents pathological autonomic plasticity after spinal cord injury

Faith H. Brennan et al.

Summary: After SCI, structural remodeling and plasticity within spinal autonomic circuitry lead to abnormal sympathetic reflexes. Early treatment with human-equivalent doses of GBP can prevent dysautonomia and protect against other complications, even after treatment is stopped. This suggests that GBP could be repurposed to prevent dysautonomia in individuals at high risk for SCI.
