Effect of pine-tar bath on disease severity in moderate-to-severe childhood eczema: an investigator-blinded, crossover, randomized clinical trial

Wing Gi Gigi Ng et al.

Summary: Bathing with pine-tar is an effective and recommended adjuvant treatment for patients with atopic dermatitis. Disease improvement is associated with reduction of Staphylococcus aureus colonization and IgE levels. Acceptability of both bath oils was good, and no product-related serious adverse events were recorded.

Initial Evidence of Distinguishable Bacterial and Fungal Dysbiosis in the Skin of Patients with Atopic Dermatitis or Netherton Syndrome

Verena Moosbrugger-Martinz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the associations between specific skin disease features and the skin bacterial and fungal microbiota. Results showed an increase in specific bacterial species in ichthyosis vulgaris, AD, and NS, with correlations between the abundance of Staphylococcus and transepidermal water loss and serum IgE levels. Additionally, different fungal species expansion was observed in AD and NS, suggesting a complex interaction between bacterial and fungal dysbiosis in these skin diseases.

Atopic dermatitis microbiomes stratify into ecologic dermotypes enabling microbial virulence and disease severity

Angeline S. L. Tay et al.

Summary: Different microbial profiles on AD skin were identified, with dermotype B showing reduced microbial richness, depletion of certain species, individual-specific outlier abundance of Staphylococcus species, and enrichment in metabolic pathways and virulence genes. These microbial configurations were associated with more severe itching, frequent flares, and increased disease severity in patients.

Mouse models of atopic dermatitis: a critical reappraisal

Amos Gilhar et al.

Summary: Mouse models for atopic dermatitis have limitations in reflecting the clinical complexity of human AD, and it is suggested that valid models should meet specific criteria to be considered relevant for human AD research. Humanized AD mouse models offer a promising alternative to current mouse models for preclinical research.

Staphylococcal Phage in Combination with Staphylococcus epidermidis as a Potential Treatment for Staphylococcus aureus-Associated Atopic Dermatitis and Suppressor of Phage-Resistant Mutants

Yuzuki Shimamori et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is often associated with the overgrowth of Staphylococcus aureus, and phage therapy shows promising clinical applications in treating skin infections by reducing the bacterial load and disease exacerbation. Typical commensal bacteria in healthy skin can also help reduce S. aureus resistance to phage therapy.

Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Phage SaGU1 that Infects Staphylococcus aureus Clinical Isolates from Patients with Atopic Dermatitis

Yuzuki Shimamori et al.

Summary: A novel bacteriophage SaGU1 was characterized in this study from sewage samples in Japan, showing potential as a phage therapy agent against S. aureus infections. SaGU1 demonstrated heat stability, lytic activity, and a broad host range targeting clinical isolates of S. aureus on the skin of AD patients. It is considered a promising candidate for developing phage therapy to treat AD caused by pathogenic S. aureus.

Corynebacterium accolens Has Antimicrobial Activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus Pathogens Isolated from the Sinonasal Niche of Chronic Rhinosinusitis Patients

Martha Alemayehu Menberu et al.

Summary: Corynebacterium accolens is a dominant species in healthy human nasal microbiota and shows potential antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Culture supernatants from C. accolens exhibited significant antibacterial activity and reduced the metabolic activity and biofilm biomass of S. aureus and MRSA clinical isolates, indicating its promise for probiotic therapies to promote sinus health.

Beneficial effects of coagulase-negative Staphylococci on Staphylococcus aureus skin colonization

Katharina Bier et al.

Summary: Our skin is constantly exposed to a variety of pathogens and selective colonization by commensal microorganisms like coagulase-negative Staphylococci. Staphylococcus aureus, a facultative pathogen, can promote inflammation by colonizing inflamed skin of atopic dermatitis patients. The loss of microbiome diversity is associated with enhanced S. aureus skin colonization, indicating a role for skin commensals in shaping pathogen colonization.
