In vivo optoretinography of phototransduction activation and energy metabolism in retinal photoreceptors

Guangying Ma et al.

Summary: The study aims to verify the anatomic correlate of the second outer retina band in OCT using IOS imaging, and demonstrates the potential for concurrent ORG of phototransduction activation and energy metabolism in retinal photoreceptors. The rapid IOS change at the outer segment reflects phototransduction activation, while the slower change at the inner segment may indicate energy metabolism due to mitochondria activation. The consistency of distribution supports the IS ellipsoid as the source of the 2nd OCT band.

Sildenafil-evoked photoreceptor oxidative stress in vivo is unrelated to impaired visual performance in mice

Bruce A. Berkowitz et al.

Summary: The phosphodiesterase inhibitor sildenafil can induce oxidative stress in photoreceptors of wildtype mice, primarily in the superior peripheral outer retina. This oxidative stress is not correlated with impaired vision, which is mainly affected by cone-based visual performance.
