Variational design principles for nonequilibrium colloidal assembly

Avishek Das et al.

Summary: By utilizing large deviation theory and principles of stochastic optimal control, optimal forces for targeted self-assembly within nonequilibrium steady-states can be determined to enhance the stability of the target structure. Tunable complexity of specific short-range interactions allows for high yield assembly of colloidal clusters, with shear flow affecting the yield differently based on the rigidity of the clusters. The influence of shear on yield enhancement or suppression is rationalized through a generalized linear response theory, with basic design principles for targeted assembly out of equilibrium uncovered through the study of unique clusters.

A reinforcement learning approach to rare trajectory sampling

Dominic C. Rose et al.

Summary: This article presents a general approach to adaptively construct dynamics efficiently sampling rare events using reinforcement learning techniques. By minimizing the distance between reweighted ensembles and controlled dynamics, methods similar to reinforcement learning are used to numerically approximate the optimal dynamics for rare events.

Odd Diffusivity of Chiral Random Motion

Cory Hargus et al.

Summary: Diffusive transport is characterized by a diffusivity tensor that may contain both symmetric and antisymmetric components. This study reveals the presence of an odd diffusivity component, often neglected, as a general characteristic of random motion breaking time-reversal and parity symmetries. The application of Green-Kubo relations is demonstrated through molecular dynamics simulations, showing the emergence of odd diffusivity in a chiral random walk model.

Mapping current and activity fluctuations in exclusion processes: consequences and open questions

Matthieu Vanicat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-trivial correspondence between activity and current in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP), applying a similarity transform on the deformed Markov matrix to establish a mapping between two ASEPs with different parameters. The mapping is expressed in the language of Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory (MFT) in the diffusive scaling limit, revealing a regime of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang in the distribution of activity in the SSEP. Additionally, the study characterizes hyperuniformity in particle configurations at large activity and formulates a conjecture for a correlation function in spin chains based on the MFT results.

On the molecular correlations that result in field-dependent conductivities in electrolyte solutions

Dominika Lesnicki et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic and static correlations contributing to electric field-dependent ionic conductivity in electrolyte solutions using response theory and nonequilibrium ensemble reweighting. It is found that increased ion correlations under certain conditions result in insensitivity of the conductivity to the field.

Ultrahigh Convergent Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanotubes from Comprehensive Atomistic Modeling

Giuseppe Barbalinardo et al.

Summary: This study found that the thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes has a finite limit at macroscopic lengths, due to the mean free path of phonons being several millimeters. The extremely high thermal conductivity at room temperature is determined by quantum effects, and in carbon nanotubes, the divergent nature of thermal conductivity in one-dimensional model systems is suppressed by anharmonic scattering channels.

Principles of low dissipation computing from a stochastic circuit model

Chloe Ya Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a minimal stochastic model for complementary logic gates built with field-effect transistors, characterizes their performance using information theory tools, and studies the interplay between accuracy, speed, and dissipation in computations. It is found that high accuracy can be achieved with sufficient energy consumption and time, while accuracy and speed are coupled in low-energy computing depending on device architecture and task. This work bridges the gap between low dissipation digital device engineering and theoretical developments in stochastic thermodynamics, providing insights into design principles for low dissipation digital devices.

Summary: The paper discusses how tensor network methods can accurately compute the spectral properties of deformed Markov generators, and demonstrates an efficient sampling scheme using matrix product state approximation of dominant eigenvectors. The approach is applied to three lattice models and potential generalizations to higher dimensions are discussed.

Inverse design of nonequilibrium steady states: A large-deviation approach

William D. Pineros et al.

Summary: The paper demonstrates how to design complex nonequilibrium steady-state density distributions and flux field flows using the large-deviation behavior of a Brownian particle. The method is validated by replicating analytical results and showing the capacity to yield complex prescribed targets. This approach is considered a first step towards designing more complex NESS where general frameworks are lacking.

Collective motion in large deviations of active particles

Yann-Edwin Keta et al.

Summary: We analyzed the collective motion that occurs during rare events in systems of active particles, and discussed the associated dynamical phase transition to collective motion. A finite biasing field is needed to induce spontaneous symmetry breaking, and particle alignment is studied both for a two-particle system and for many-particle systems using an optimal-control representation of the biased dynamics. Additionally, a fluctuating hydrodynamic theory is proposed to capture the emergence of polar order in the biased state.
