Fate of nitrate during groundwater recharge in a fractured karst aquifer in Southwest Germany

Anna-Neva Visser et al.

Summary: This study in Germany investigated the role of karstified recharge areas in nitrate (NO3-) transfer and turnover, revealing a significant spatial variability in groundwater NO3- concentrations. Isotopic analysis confirmed the main source of NO3- is manure or fertilizer applications, with denitrification indicated by high delta N-15 and delta O-18 values in NO3- and elevated NO2- concentrations. The results suggest that fissure networks in the phreatic zone and the epikarst play an important role in nitrogen turnover during aquifer recharge.

Nitrate Removal by a Novel Lithoautotrophic Nitrate-Reducing, Iron(II)-Oxidizing Culture Enriched from a Pyrite-Rich Limestone Aquifer

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: Nitrate removal in olitrotrophic environments is limited by the availability of organic electron donors. Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria may play a key role in denitrification in aquifers depleted in organic carbon. An enriched lithoautotrophic culture of nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation microorganisms was successfully obtained from nitrate-containing groundwater.
