Towards improved fish tests in ecotoxicology - Efficient chronic and multi-generational testing with the killifish Nothobranchius furzeri

Eli S. J. Thore et al.

Summary: This article discusses how to conduct more relevant, time- and cost-efficient fish-based testing in ecotoxicology, introduces a fish model suitable for such research agendas – the turquoise killifish, and proposes an action plan for its introduction into accredited test guidelines.

Generation-specific and interactive effects of pesticide and antidepressant exposure in a fish model call for multi-stressor and multigenerational testing

Eli S. J. Thore et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of full life-cycle exposure to the emerging pollutant fluoxetine in combination with chronic exposure to the pesticide 3,4-dichlomaniline on two successive generations of N. furzeri. Both life-history and behavior were affected by the exposure, with inhibitory effects on growth and fecundity being generation-dependent, and enhanced swimming acceleration and feeding in response to fluoxetine dependent on the presence of 3,4-DCA. The findings demonstrate the relevance of a multi-stressor approach across successive generations and show the possibility of conducting full life-cycle and multigenerational tests within a short timespan using the killifish N. furzeri.

Time-, dose- and transgenerational effects of fluoxetine on the behavioural responses of zebrafish to a conspecific alarm substance

Asma Al Shuraiqi et al.

Summary: Despite the publication of numerous papers, the effects of fluoxetine on fish behavior remain controversial and contradictory. This study exposed adult zebrafish to various concentrations of fluoxetine and found that the effects varied over time and in a non-monotonic manner, suggesting a complex interaction between the serotonergic system and environmental stimuli.

Psychoactive pollution suppresses individual differences in fish behaviour

Giovanni Poiverino et al.

Summary: The study reveals that fluoxetine homogenizes activity in guppies, reducing individual variation even at low concentrations. The research suggests that this effect may impair the adaptive potential of fish in response to environmental changes.

Multiple urban stressors drive fish-based ecological networks in streams of Columbus, Ohio, USA

S. Mazeika Patricio Sullivan et al.

Summary: Integrating a network perspective into research on multiple stressors in rivers can reveal indirect stressor effects and estimate both taxonomic and functional community characteristics. Urban stressors such as impervious surfaces and sedimentation can decrease network complexity, compartmentalization, and stability, with larger streams buffering the negative effects of these stressors.
