Lessons Learned from the Two Major Tailings Dam Accidents in Brazil

Jair Carlos Koppe

Summary: This paper discusses the management practices, relevant legislation, and supervision of tailings dams in Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as the possible causes of these dam breaks and evaluates whether the measures taken by National Mining Agency will prevent more such accidents. The failure mode for both tailings dams was liquefaction flow, and despite the ANM's efforts, further failures may occur due to many other tailings dams being in similar conditions.

Blended municipal compost and biosolids materials for mine reclamation: Long-term field studies to explore metal mobility, soil fertility and microbial communities

Asma Asemaninejad et al.

Summary: The application of stable soil amendments is crucial for the successful phytostabilization and rehabilitation of mine tailings. However, increasing the rates of biosolids application may not equivalently improve soil quality and geochemical stability. Microbial communities were altered and key decomposers were reduced by high rate treatments, impacting the long-term efficiency of the compost cover.

Reactive transport modelling of porewater geochemistry and sulfur isotope fractionation in organic carbon amended mine tailings

Andrew T. Craig et al.

Summary: Reactive transport models developed in this study successfully simulated hydrogeochemical processes and isotope fractionation over four years in test cells with and without organic carbon amendments, indicating the importance of sulfate reduction and metal-sulfide precipitation. The findings suggest that coupled reactive transport modeling can enhance understanding of hydrogeochemical and biogeochemical controls in in situ treatment systems, showcasing the potential benefits of this technique for improving water quality in mine drainage.

Evaluating feedstocks for carbon dioxide removal by enhanced rock weathering and CO2 mineralization

Carlos Paulo et al.

Summary: Mineralogically complex feedstocks such as kimberlite, serpentinite, and wollastonite skarns have potential for carbon dioxide sequestration, but distinguishing between carbonate and non-carbonate sources of easily extractable cations is crucial for accurately assessing CO2 storage capacity. The study developed a new method involving batch leach tests to evaluate the reactivity of these feedstocks, with results indicating the importance of silicate dissolution and exclusion of carbonate minerals for effective CO2 sequestration.
