Fugitive emissions of polycyclic aromatic compounds from an oil sands tailings pond based on fugacity and inverse dispersion flux calculations

Maryam Moradi et al.

Summary: This study for the first time assessed the emissions of PACs from the Suncor Tailings Pond 2/3 in Alberta, confirming volatilization fluxes of PACs using three different models. The findings highlight the necessity of gathering data from other tailings ponds to determine their contributions to PAC emissions to the atmosphere.

Methane emissions from an oil sands tailings pond: a quantitative comparison of fluxes derived by different methods

Yuan You et al.

Summary: Different micrometeorological flux methods and traditional flux chambers were used to quantify fugitive emissions from tailings ponds, showing varying levels of accuracy and minimal variability in emissions. The larger footprint and higher temporal resolution of micrometeorological flux measurement methods may lead to more robust estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from ponds.

Quantifying fugitive gas emissions from an oil sands tailings pond with open-path Fourier transform infrared measurements

Yuan You et al.

Summary: This study evaluated open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as a potential alternative method for quantifying spatially representative fluxes for various pollutants from tailings ponds in the Alberta oil sands. The results showed that methane gradient fluxes were lower than nearby eddy covariance measurements, while inverse-dispersion fluxes had a high level of agreement. Significant NH3 and alkane emission fluxes were observed using the gradient fluxes method.
