The differing role of weather systems in southern Australian rainfall between 1979-1996 and 1997-2015

Acacia S. Pepler et al.

Summary: Most of the rainfall in southern Australia is associated with cyclones, cold fronts, and thunderstorms, and cases when these weather systems co-occur are particularly likely to cause extreme rainfall. In recent decades, declines in cool season rainfall in some areas have been attributed to decreases in the rainfall from fronts and/or cyclones, while thunderstorm-related rainfall has increased. However, the frequency of combined weather systems, such as cyclones or fronts with thunderstorms, has not been previously assessed and can have a significant impact on rainfall.

Understanding trends in hydrologic extremes across Australia

Conrad Wasko et al.

Summary: Changes in the hydrologic cycle have significant impacts on agricultural productivity, water resources availability, and environmental management in Australia. While northern parts of Australia have experienced increasing rainfall and water availability, the southwest and southeast coast have seen declines in rainfall, affecting runoff and soil moisture. Standardised runoff index indicates increasing streamflow droughts across large parts of Australia.

Towards advancing scientific knowledge of climate change impacts on short-duration rainfall extremes

Hayley J. Fowler et al.

Summary: Recent studies have focused on understanding short-duration rainfall extremes and their impacts on flash floods, landslides, and debris flows. With global warming, the intensity of long-duration heavy precipitation increases, with rare events and localized short-duration intensities potentially scaling at higher rates. Further research and international coordination are needed to better detect and understand changes in intense short-duration rainfall.
