Toxic metals in human milk in relation to tobacco smoke exposure

Marta Szukalska et al.

Summary: The study compared the levels of essential and toxic metals in breast milk of smoking women, women exposed to second-hand smoke, and non-smoking women. Exposure to tobacco smoke was found to increase concentrations of heavy metals, potentially disrupting the growth and development of newborns and infants. These findings highlight the importance of educating lactating women about the risks of tobacco smoke exposure.

Thirdhand Smoke Contamination and Infant Nicotine Exposure in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: An Observational Study

Thomas F. Northrup et al.

Summary: The study identified pathways of furniture contamination and infant exposure to thirdhand smoke (THS) during neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization, despite hospital regulations against tobacco/nicotine use. This highlights the potential spread of nicotine and THS-related health risks to vulnerable infants during crucial developmental stages.
