Trace metals in Rio Doce sediments before and after the collapse of the Fundao iron ore tailing dam, Southeastern Brazil

Eduardo Baudson Duarte et al.

Summary: The collapse of the Fundao Dam in Southeastern Brazil led to a significant environmental disaster, impacting the Rio Doce river and its surrounding areas. Large amounts of iron ore tailings flowed into the river, affecting the concentration of trace metals in the sediments. The study found an increase in cadmium and arsenic levels in sediment after the disaster, with mining mud identified as the main source of cadmium.

Manganese: The overlooked contaminant in the world largest mine tailings dam collapse

Hermano M. Queiroz et al.

Summary: The study assessed manganese contamination in the Rio Doce estuary after the collapse of the world's largest mine tailings dam, finding a significant increase in dissolved manganese and decrease in total manganese content in soils over the following two years. The dynamic interaction between Fe and Mn in the impacted estuary poses a high risk to estuarine biota and human health, indicating a possible chronic contamination scenario.

Physical, chemical and microbiological characterization of the soils contaminated by iron ore tailing mud after Fundao Dam disaster in Brazil

Fernanda Resende Couto et al.

Summary: This study conducted a characterization of soils contaminated by iron ore tailing mud after the Fundao dam collapse in Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was found that one year after the dam failure, microbial activity was disturbed in the contaminated soil, leading to decreased nutrient and carbon concentrations. However, a community of phototrophic microorganisms, primarily cyanobacteria, was observed in the affected soil, which may play a role in enhancing the initial stage of succession.

Recovering Soils Affected by Iron Mining Tailing Using Herbaceous Species with Mycorrhizal Inoculation

Carin Sgobi Zanchi et al.

Summary: The research evaluated a soil recovery strategy in soils affected by iron mining tailings using herbaceous species inoculated with AMF. The results showed that the cultivation system with three herbaceous plants was more efficient in accumulating elements and had higher root dry matter production, as well as higher mycorrhizal colonization.

Assessment of iron-rich tailings via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry: the Mariana dam disaster, southeast Brazil

Gabriel W. D. Ferreira et al.

Summary: The collapse of the Fundao dam in November 5, 2015 led to the release of a large amount of iron-rich mining sediments into the Doce river basin, covering thousands of hectares of land. Portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to assess elemental composition and predict fertility properties of the impacted areas, showing promising potential for successful environmental rehabilitation. The technology successfully differentiated alluvial mud from native soils and reasonably predicted fertility properties in heterogeneous substrates.

Role of Fe dynamic in release of metals at Rio Doce estuary: Unfolding of a mining disaster

Hermano M. Queiroz et al.

Summary: The dynamic role of Fe oxyhydroxides on metal bioavailability in the Rio Doce estuary was studied after the largest mining disaster in the world in 2015. Results showed that Fe oxyhydroxides in estuarine soils underwent reductive dissolution due to organic matter inputs from plant colonization on deposited tailings, leading to significant decreases in Fe and total metal contents in the soil. This suggests a potential chronic contamination in the estuary and highlights the aggravating scenario for the following years due to the increasing dominance of poorly crystalline Fe oxyhydroxides.

High C-and N-based soil fertility and microbial associations sustain the plant biodiversity of the campo rupestre in Brazil

Erica E. Baiao et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the campo rupestre vegetation in a preserved area has high soil fertility, supporting plant biodiversity. The legume Mimosa calodendron hosts nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its nodules, contributing to soil nitrogen cycling.

Biochemical attributes and establishment of tree seedlings in soil after Urochloa decumbens cultivation in soil with deposition of iron mining residues

Alexandre Carvalho Ribeiro Junior et al.

Summary: The deposition of iron mining mud and tailings did not affect microbial biomass carbon or basal soil respiration, however it did reduce the activity of beta-glucosidase and easy extractable glomalin. While mud deposition reduced the shoot and root dry weight of Schinus terebinthifolius, Urochloa decumbens and Eremanthus incanus did not show variation in dry weight production, indicating their ability to grow in soil affected by mining residue.
