Understanding cool flames and warm flames Yiguang Ju

Yiguang Ju

Summary: Low-temperature flames, including cool flames, warm flames, double flames, and auto-ignition assisted flames, play a critical role in advanced engines and fuel design. Research on their structures, dynamics, and combustion limits is important for future engine development. Additionally, using low temperature flames to validate chemical kinetic models of alternative fuels is a novel research direction.

Towards predictive combustion kinetic models: Progress in model analysis and informative experiments

Bin Yang

Summary: The accurate and robust kinetic models are crucial in combustion chemistry research. Reliable experimental data and advanced diagnostic techniques play essential roles in model development. New strategies like ASSM and ANN-HDMR can reduce model dimensionality and computational cost significantly, while global-sensitivity based experimental design methods can guide kinetics-information-enriched data generation. The computational framework OptEx provides a new means for integrating experimental data with mechanism development, design, and optimization to develop reliable kinetic models more efficiently and effectively.

Plug-flow reactor and shock-tube study of the oxidation of very fuel-rich natural gas/DME/O2 mixtures

D. Kaczmarek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reaction mechanisms of fuel-rich natural gas/dimethyl ether mixtures, revealing the role of dimethyl ether in forming radicals at low temperatures and initiating the conversion of alkanes, as well as the interaction between alkanes and dimethyl ether in promoting the formation of synthesis gas, unsaturated hydrocarbons, and oxygenated species. The experimental results are in good agreement with kinetic simulations using literature reaction mechanisms, providing insights into the potential applications of polygeneration processes in internal combustion engines.

An experimental and kinetic modeling study of cyclopentane and dimethyl ether blends

Nitin Lokachari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the auto-ignition of cyclopentane/dimethyl ether blends and revises a detailed kinetic model for cyclopentane. It is found that the low temperature reactivity of cyclopentane is controlled by the branching ratio of QOOH radicals formation.

Ignition delay times of iso-butane activated by DME under various equivalence ratios in the shock tube

Xue Jiang et al.

Summary: The ignition delay of DME and i-butane shows opposite equivalence ratio dependence at high temperatures, and the addition of DME promotes the ignition delay of i-butane, especially as the equivalence ratio increases. The research results indicate no significant fuel to fuel interactions between DME and i-butane under the present conditions, with the high reactivity of DME leading to the accelerated auto-ignition of i-butane.

Combustion chemistry in the twenty-first century: Developing theory-informed chemical kinetics models

James A. Miller et al.

Summary: Theoretical chemistry, especially theoretical chemical kinetics, has become increasingly important in developing combustion chemical kinetics models over the past 20 to 25 years. Theoretical methods for obtaining rate parameters are now competitive in accuracy with experiments, especially for small molecules. In addition, theoretical methods can handle conditions that experiments often cannot.

Study of soot formations in co-flow laminar diffusion flames of n-heptane and oxygenated aromatic biofuels from atmospheric condition to 2.3 bar

Wenyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics of soot formation in laminar co-flow diffusion flames with n-heptane and its blends with anisole and benzyl alcohol under atmospheric to elevated pressures. The addition of anisole and benzyl alcohol was found to enhance soot formation in flames, with benzyl alcohol having a particularly significant effect. Elevated pressure was also observed to increase soot formation, with differences in power dependence between n-heptane/anisole and n-heptane flames.
