Quantifying environmental impacts of primary aluminum ingot production and consumption : A trade-linked multilevel life cycle assessment

Summary: Aluminum production has adverse environmental impacts, and our study enhances existing LCAs of primary aluminum by examining spatial and temporal differences in alumina refining and aluminum smelting, as well as the trade of alumina and primary aluminum ingots. The research highlights the importance of spatial differentiation for highly traded products and offers recommendations for LCA practitioners.

It concludes that the amount of recycled aluminum will increase gradually in the future. It is expected that China's aluminum industry will reach the peak of greenhouse gas emissions around 2030.
