Comparison of Landfill Leachate Properties by LPI and Phytotoxicity-A Case Study

Aleksandra Wdowczyk et al.

Summary: The formation of leachate in landfills is inevitable and their toxicity is an important parameter to consider before discharge into the environment. The study found that leachates from selected Polish landfills have low to medium levels of pollution index values. The relationship between phytotoxicity and LPI values was confirmed, indicating that LPI can be considered as a reliable indicator of leachate toxicity.

Effect of Emergency Water Discharges from the Dam in Wloclawek on the Sedimentary Structures of Channel Bars in the Lower Flow Regime of the River Vistula

Marcin Hojan et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of studies conducted on two channel bars formed in the River Vistula that were transformed during emergency discharges of water from the Wloclawek reservoir. Changes in structure and texture were analyzed by digging pits in the channel bars and taking samples for grain-size analysis. It was observed that changes in water level and flow are reflected in sedimentary structures. Additionally, emergent channel bars are affected by aeolian processes that wear the flow marks off.

Possibility of Hydropower Development: A Simple-to-Use Index

Agnieszka Operacz

Summary: This study introduces a standardized range system for assessing the feasibility of hydropower implementation based on carefully selected multi-criteria, providing a simple-to-use and easy-to-understand methodology. With increasing global concern for the natural environment, the use of renewable energy sources, such as hydropower, has become popular. The innovative range system proposed in this work could potentially fill the gap in the literature by providing a method for practical estimation of hydropower potential.

Ecological impacts of run -of -river hydropower plants ? Current status and future prospects on the brink of energy transition

Alban Kuriqi et al.

Summary: The widespread perception of small run-of-river hydropower plants as renewable energy sources has led to their global proliferation, but such schemes may have negative impacts on fluvial ecosystems. Different types of small run-of-river hydropower schemes have varying ecological impacts, with diversion weir and pondage schemes being less eco-friendly compared to dam-toe schemes. Environmental flows are crucial for ecosystem conservation in rivers affected by hydropower operations.

Changes in climatic patterns and tourism and their concomitant effect on drinking water transfers into the region of South Aegean, Greece

Dimitrios Myronidis et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the climate in the South Aegean region is shifting to warmer conditions with less precipitation, impacting vital sectors such as water resource availability. Significant positive trends were noted in climate extreme indices, aridity and drought, with changes in tourism variables also observed. The correlation between water transfers and climate patterns suggests a strong positive correlation with diurnal temperature range and moderately negative association with precipitation-related indices.

Remediation of Metal/Metalloid-Polluted Soils: A Short Review

Carla Maria Raffa et al.

Summary: The contamination of soil by heavy metals and metalloids is a global issue, requiring monitoring and remediation methods. Various techniques are available, with the choice mainly depending on factors such as contaminated site geology and cost. Some techniques are widely used, while others are still in the research stage.

Net primary production increases in the Yangtze River Basin within the latest two decades

Jianyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation carbon storage in the Yangtze River Basin, revealing the differential impacts of human activities and climate change on vegetation carbon change. Forests were found to be crucial for increased vegetation carbon in different regions, highlighting the importance of forest protection and reforestation in mitigating rapid urbanization in the basin.

Contamination of Stream Sediment With Heavy Metals in the Awetu Watershed of Southwestern Ethiopia

Higemengist Astatkie et al.

Summary: Surface sediment samples collected from different streams of Awetu Watershed in southwestern Ethiopia were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations. The study revealed significant levels of As, Cd, and Cr in the Dololo and Kito streams compared to others, with Pb showing the highest concentration and Hg the lowest.
