FAM134B-RHD Protein Clustering Drives Spontaneous Budding of Asymmetric Membranes

Marc Siggel et al.

Summary: Living cells constantly remodel the shape of their lipid membranes. The Reticulophagy Regulator 1 (RETR1/FAM134B) in the endoplasmic reticulum forms autophagic puncta associated with membrane removal. Molecular dynamics simulations show that FAM134B-RHD clusters induce membrane buds formation in a nucleation process, with kinetics depending on protein concentration and bilayer asymmetry.
