Onset of plate tectonics by the Eoarchean

Brian F. Windley et al.

Summary: The paper presents evidence suggesting that plate tectonics was already in operation during the Eoarchean period around 4.0 billion years ago. It highlights the presence of two types of plate tectonics - Accretionary Cycle Plate Tectonics and Wilson Cycle Plate Tectonics in the early Earth, leading to the formation and growth of continental landmasses and subsequent continent collisions. The holistic view of crustal growth and continental evolution suggested in the paper provides a robust and testable model of Earth evolution from its early stages to the present day.

Oxygen isotopes trace the origins of Earth's earliest continental crust

Robert H. Smithies et al.

Summary: The research identified two different types of TTG using variations in zircon oxygen isotope composition and whole-rock geochemistry. Primitive TTGs containing high levels of sodium do not require a source highly enriched in incompatible trace elements, while evolved TTGs need sources enriched in water from the hydrosphere and incompatible trace elements.

Internal structure of the Paleoarchean Mt Edgar dome, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia

Nicolas M. Roberts et al.

Summary: The Paleoarchean East Pilbara Terrane of Western Australia is a debated geological structure that holds significance for early Earth geodynamics. Research indicates that the internal structure of granitic domes within the terrane may support the vertical tectonics model, proposing a three-stage evolution for the Mt Edgar dome. This suggests that diapiric processes played a key role in the formation of dome-and-keel terranes in the Paleoarchean.

Hadean geodynamics and the nature of early continental crust

Jun Korenaga

Summary: Reconstructing Earth history during the Hadean period presents challenges due to the limited availability of Hadean zircons. This review considers methods to gain a global perspective by better constraining continental crust evolution and understanding the solidification of a putative magma ocean. It presents a new perspective on early Earth evolution, starting with rapid plate tectonics and transitioning to a more modern-style plate tectonics, with the potential to explain the evolution of all Earth system components.
