The optical river bathymetry toolkit

Carl J. Legleiter

Summary: ORByT is a standalone software package that can map water depth from passive optical image data with a thorough accuracy assessment. However, this approach is only suitable for clear-flowing, shallow streams and not appropriate for more turbid, deeper rivers.

How to Avoid and Correct Biased Riverine Surface Image Velocimetry

M. Detert

Summary: With the decreasing cost of digital image data acquisition and the availability of various image analysis tools, the number of image-based measurement applications is on the rise, but so is the number of misleading applications. This paper demonstrates how to avoid and correct problematic measurement setups and erroneous analyses by reexamining recently published data sets, presenting improved results by following best practices in image velocimetry. By implementing measures such as camera calibration, frame rate correction, and filter application, significant improvements in measurement results can be achieved.

Using Deep Learning for Automatic Water Stage Measurements

Anette Eltner et al.

Summary: This study introduces an automatic water stage measurement method combining deep learning and photogrammetric techniques, providing accurate water stage measurements. The method first segments water in images using convolutional neural networks and then transforms image information into metric water stage values by intersecting with a 3D model reconstructed with structure-from-motion photogrammetry. Experimental results show that the method achieves a correlation of 0.93 with reference gauges and average deviations lower than 4 cm.

From consumer to enterprise grade: How the choice of four UAS impacts point cloud quality

Manuel Stark et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the systematic and random errors in digital elevation models derived from four commonly used UAS systems. The research reveals significant differences in accuracies among the UAS, with the Mavic Pro showing lower accuracy possibly due to the influence of the control system and camera calibration.
