Definitions and Operationalization of Mental Health Problems, Wellbeing and Participation Constructs in Children with NDD: Distinctions and Clarifications

Mats Granlund et al.

Summary: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders are more likely to experience restricted participation and mental health problems. This conceptual paper aims to define and describe mental health issues, mental health, and participation in order to lay a conceptual foundation for future research on using participation to improve mental health in children with NDD. Factors such as defining mental health problems, separate measurement of mental health and wellbeing, and understanding the relationship between participation and wellbeing are crucial in this context. Wellbeing can play a key role in promoting participation and protecting against mental health issues for children with NDD.

Short-term longitudinal participation trajectories related to domestic life and peer relations for adolescents with and without self-reported neurodevelopmental impairments

Frida Lygnegard et al.

Summary: The study found that sibling support and family communication are important factors in predicting participation levels among adolescents, while self-reported neurodevelopmental impairments may not predict typical trajectories of attendance and importance. The type of impairment is less important in predicting typical trajectories.
