COVID-19 fatality prediction in people with diabetes and prediabetes using a simple score upon hospital admission

Harald Sourij et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess predictors of in-hospital mortality in people with prediabetes and diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19 infection, finding that the in-hospital mortality rate was higher in people with diabetes compared to those with prediabetes but without statistical significance. A risk score using five routinely available patient variables, including age, arterial occlusive disease, C-reactive protein, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and aspartate aminotransferase levels, showed excellent predictive performance for assessing in-hospital mortality.

Adverse outcomes in COVID-19 and diabetes: a retrospective cohort study from three London teaching hospitals

Chioma Izzi-Engbeaya et al.

Summary: Patients with diabetes mellitus admitted to hospital with COVID-19 have poorer outcomes, with factors such as male gender, advancing age, lower platelet count, and higher Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) score independently predicting poor outcomes. Antiplatelet medication was associated with a lower risk of death/ICU admission. Comorbidities such as diabetes with ischemic heart disease were major determinants of poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Matthieu Wargny et al.

Summary: The study identified prognostic factors for hospital discharge and death in patients with diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19, finding that younger age, routine metformin therapy, longer symptom duration on admission were positively associated with discharge, while history of microvascular complications, anticoagulant routine therapy, dyspnoea on admission, and higher levels of certain biomarkers were associated with reduced chance of discharge.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the association between statin use and composite poor outcomes of COVID-19, and found that statin use did not improve the composite poor outcomes of COVID-19. Age, gender, and cardiovascular disease influenced the association with composite poor outcomes of COVID-19.

Cynthia Putri et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed a significant association between Parkinson's Disease and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19, with PD patients at higher risk of severe illness and mortality. Age was identified as a factor influencing this association. Careful monitoring and preventive measures are recommended for PD patients to minimize the risks of infections.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, a total of 28 studies with 18,255,040 COVID-19 patients were assessed. Overall, HIV was associated with a higher mortality from COVID-19. Studies from Africa and the United States showed statistically significant associations. The findings suggest that PLWH should be prioritized for receiving the COVID-19 vaccine to minimize the risk of death.

Summary: The study found that tocilizumab can reduce the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients, but does not affect the severity of the disease and length of hospital stay. Additionally, it is not associated with more serious adverse events compared to standard care treatment. Future research should focus on other potential therapies for COVID-19 patients.

Summary: GLP-1RAs, in addition to their role as glucose-lowering agents, also exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-obesogenic, pulmonary protective, and positive effects on gut microbiome. Hence, they appear to be potential candidates for treating patients affected by COVID-19, with or without type 2 diabetes, and as excellent agents for managing diabetes during the pandemic.
