Experimental simulation of environmental warming selects against pigmented morphs of land snails

Heinz-R. Koehler et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermal stress caused by solar radiation on increasingly pigmented snails in their natural Mediterranean habitat was investigated. The results showed that dark morphs suffered from high internal temperatures, oxidative stress, and a breakdown of the chaperone system. With further global warming, mortality rate is predicted to increase among pigmented snails living in areas with strong solar radiation. Additionally, the frequency of pigmented morphs is expected to decline in response to increasing average summer temperatures.
