Metabolic engineering of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 for improved bisabolene production

Summary: The study focused on enhancing the production of (E)-alpha-bisabolene in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 by improving the MEP pathway and overexpressing bottleneck enzymes. While overexpression of certain enzymes led to increased production, it also caused significant growth impairment. High cell density cultures showed significantly higher volumetric titres, especially with strains possessing an improved MEP pathway.
