Photodegradation of carbon dots cause cytotoxicity

Yue-Yue Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that carbon dots degrade into toxic molecules under light irradiation, affecting both normal and cancerous human cells. The process of CD degradation and production of cytotoxic molecules is influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, light intensity and wavelength. Commercial CDs show similar photodegraded products and cytotoxicity profiles, suggesting that photodegradation-induced cytotoxicity is likely common to CDs regardless of their chemical composition.

Temperature triggered high-performance carbon dots with robust solvatochromic effect and self-quenching-resistant deep red solid state fluorescence for specific lipid droplet imaging

Dong Gao et al.

Summary: A simple solvothermal strategy was developed to synthesize high-performance CDs by controlling the carbonized core and polymer structure, leading to CD with unique photophysical behaviors. These CDs exhibit strong solvatochromic effect and self-quenching-resistant solid-state fluorescence, making them efficient probes for staining lipid droplets and real-time monitoring of physiological processes.
