Understanding the aqueous phases of alkali-activated slag paste under water curing

Xiaohong Zhu et al.

Summary: The chemical compositions of the aqueous phases in alkali-activated slag (AAS) paste and Portland cement (PC) paste were studied and compared up to 28 days to better understand the stability of hydration products in the two binder systems. It was found that different solid phases, stability, and conductivity were observed between PC and AAS systems, with tobermorite-based C-S-H dominant in the AAS system and jennite-based and tobermorite-based C-S-H gels present in the PC system. The reactions and equilibria in both binders were found to be completely different.
