A simple extrapolated predictor for overcoming the starting and tracking issues in the arc-length method for nonlinear structural mechanics

Chennakesava Kadapa

Summary: This paper presents a simplified implementation of the arc-length method for computing equilibrium paths in nonlinear structural mechanics problems using the finite element method. The proposed technique involves extrapolating solutions from two previously converged load steps to compute the predictor, which also serves as a means for identifying forward movement along the equilibrium path without the need for sophisticated techniques. The method successfully computes complex equilibrium paths in static structural mechanics problems without requiring prohibitively small increments.
