Microscale material variability and its effect on longitudinal tensile failure of unidirectional carbon fibre composites

Fabio Malgioglio et al.

Summary: This study used finite element analysis to model the impact of local fiber volume fraction variability, fiber misalignment, and fiber strength variability on the longitudinal tensile strength of unidirectional plies. The results showed that including variability of local volume fraction and fiber misalignment in the modeling led to lower ply strength predictions, which better matched experimental results for the carbon/epoxy system studied.
