Correlation of corneal immune cell changes with clinical severity in dry eye disease: An in vivo confocal microscopy study

Shruti Aggarwal et al.

Summary: The study found that DC density significantly increased in DED patients, and the morphology of DC also changed significantly. As the severity of DED increased, the changes in DC density and morphology became more pronounced.

Mapping the origin and fate of myeloid cells in distinct compartments of the eye by single-cell profiling

Peter Wieghofer et al.

Summary: The study identified different transcriptional states of myeloid subsets in the eye, particularly disease-specific macrophage subpopulations with distinct molecular signatures during choroidal neovascularization, a hallmark of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These findings provide new insights into the innate immune system in the eye and potential therapeutic targets for ophthalmological diseases.

Corneal Immune Cells Are Increased in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis

Adnan Khan et al.

Summary: This study compared corneal immune cell density and near-nerve distance in different subtypes of patients with multiple sclerosis using corneal confocal microscopy (CCM). The results showed increased immature immune cell density and near-nerve distance in MS patients, suggesting CCM may serve as an imaging biomarker for assessing neuroimmune alterations in MS.

Relationships between activated dendritic cells and dry eye symptoms and signs

Harry Levine et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether activated dendritic cells could serve as a biomarker of systemic immune disorders in individuals with dry eye symptoms and to examine the impact of a topical anti-inflammatory agent on aDC number. The presence of >2 aDCs in the central cornea suggests a systemic immune disorder in individuals with DE symptoms, and topical anti-inflammatory therapy can reduce the number of aDCs in the central cornea.

Corneal Changes in Acanthamoeba Keratitis at Various Levels of Severity: An In Vivo Confocal Microscopic Study

Zhenyu Wei et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant increase in cyst density and surrounding dendritic cell (DC) density and maturity in patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis, which correlated with the severity of the disease. Quantitative analysis of cyst density and DC maturity may serve as a new method for evaluating the severity of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Altered Corneal Epithelial Dendritic Cell Morphology and Phenotype Following Acute Exposure to Hyperosmolar Saline

Kirthana Senthil et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to 450 mOsm/L saline for 2 hours induced morphological and phenotypic changes in corneal epithelial dendritic cells, while exposure to 600 mOsm/L saline was toxic to the cells. These results suggest that hyperosmolar conditions activate corneal dendritic cells.
