Why reducing socio-environmental externalities of electricity system expansions can boost the development of solar power generation: The case of Chile

Summary: This study examines the impacts of socio-environmental externalities on the expansion of power systems and proposes coordination of investments among market participants to mitigate the effects on land uses. Through case studies on the Chilean electricity system by 2030, it is found that considering land-use externalities can significantly influence the location of future infrastructure and mix of generation projects.
