Small airway loss in the physiologically ageing lung: a cross-sectional study in unused donor lungs

Stijn E. Verleden et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ageing on small airways in a cohort of never smokers using a combination of CT techniques. The findings suggest that the loss of terminal bronchioles is a key structural component in the age-related decline of pulmonary function in healthy, non-smoking individuals.

Automated CT Staging of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Severity for Predicting Disease Progression and Mortality with a Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Network

Kyle A. Hasenstab et al.

Summary: A deep learning-based algorithm was developed to stage the severity of COPD by quantifying emphysema and air trapping on CT images, with promising ability to predict 5-year progression and mortality. The study found significant associations between CT stages and disease progression and mortality.
