Phylogenetic Distribution of Plastic-Degrading Microorganisms

Victor Gambarini et al.

Summary: The number of reported plastic-degrading microorganisms is increasing rapidly, allowing for exploration of plastic-degrading traits conservation and distribution across diverse microbial classifications. Strong evidence was found for the degradation of the synthetic polymer polylactic acid (PLA), and related microbial species are phylogenetically conserved. A total of 16,170 putative plastic degradation orthologs were identified in microbial genomes, showcasing vast potential for further research. The comprehensive database and interactive phylogenetic tree created will aid in understanding genetic diversity and evolution of microbial plastic-degrading capabilities.

Secretory expression in Bacillus subtilis and biochemical characterization of a highly thermostable polyethylene terephthalate hydrolase from bacterium HR29

Xingxiang Xi et al.

Summary: The environmental threat of plastic waste disposal has been a major concern, and recycling PET waste into reusable materials has become a solution. This study introduced a highly efficient PETase, BhrPETase, with superior hydrolyzing activity towards amorphous PET and remarkable thermostability, making it a promising candidate for PET recycling and bioremediation applications.

Characterization of a poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) hydrolase from the mesophilic actinobacteria Rhodococcus fascians

Phouvilay Soulenthone et al.

Summary: In this study, a DNA fragment carrying the gene responsible for PBAT degradation by the strain NKCM2511 was cloned, leading to the discovery of a 216-amino-acid-long protein designated as PBATH(Rf) that belongs to the alpha/beta hydrolase fold family. This protein was found to degrade PBAT film at 30 degrees C and preferentially cleaved the ester bond between 1,4-butanediol and adipic acid. The study provides insights into the biodegradation mechanism of PBAT and the catalytic hydrolysis of various polyesters in the medium temperature range.
