Pyrometallurgical Lithium-Ion-Battery Recycling: Approach to Limiting Lithium Slagging with the InduRed Reactor Concept

Stefan Windisch-Kern et al.

Summary: The complexity of spent lithium-ion batteries waste poses challenges on recycling industry. Pyrometallurgical processes are beneficial but unable to recover lithium from black matter, whereas the InduRed reactor concept shows promise in achieving high recovery potentials for nickel, cobalt, and manganese at temperatures of 800°C to 1000°C, while preventing lithium slagging.

Electrodeposition of nano NieCo alloy with (220) preferred orientation from choline chloride-urea: Electrochemical behavior and nucleation mechanism

Wenruo Li et al.

Summary: Ionic liquid is an important solvent with significant potential in the preparation of functional materials. In this study, nano nickel-cobalt alloys were prepared in choline chloride-urea ionic liquid, with control over cobalt content, microstructure, and preferred orientation on the (220) crystal plane achieved through deposition potential. The NieCo alloy also exhibited excellent corrosion resistance.

Oxygen-free calcination for enhanced leaching of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries without a reductant

Dongxing Wang et al.

Summary: By calcining the spent electrode material in a nitrogen atmosphere, the proposed energy-saving pre-treatment process allows for easy leaching of metals from spent LIBs in H2SO4 solution without the need for reductants. This method destroys the layered crystal structure of the cathode material, enhancing metals leaching rates through refinement of crystalline size, increased defects, and amorphization. This study offers a cost-effective approach to improve metals leaching efficiency from spent LIBs.
